Nanomaterials

Nanomaterials are materials with at least one dimension in the nanometer scale. In space and astronautical engineering, nanomaterials are used for various applications such as lightweight and strong structural materials, thermal protection systems, radiation shielding, and energy storage. Due to their unique properties such as high surface area to volume ratio, quantum confinement, and surface plasmon resonance, nanomaterials have the potential to revolutionize the field of space exploration. For example, carbon nanotubes can be used to create strong and lightweight composites for spacecraft structures, while nanoscale metal particles can be used for efficient propulsion systems. However, the use of nanomaterials in space also poses challenges such as their potential toxicity and the need for reliable manufacturing processes in microgravity environments.
