Carbon-based Materials

Carbon-based materials refer to any material that is primarily composed of carbon atoms. In the context of space and astronautical engineering, carbon-based materials are of great interest due to their unique properties such as high strength, low weight, and excellent thermal conductivity. These materials are used in a variety of applications including spacecraft structures, thermal protection systems, and propulsion systems. Carbon fiber reinforced polymers (CFRP) are commonly used in spacecraft structures due to their high strength-to-weight ratio. Carbon-carbon composites are used in thermal protection systems due to their excellent thermal conductivity and resistance to high temperatures. Carbon nanotubes (CNTs) are being investigated for use in propulsion systems due to their high strength and potential for high electrical conductivity.
