Bioreactors

Bioreactors are devices that support the growth of biological cells or organisms in a controlled environment. In the context of space and astronautical engineering, bioreactors are used to study the effects of microgravity on biological systems and to produce food, medicine, and other materials for long-duration space missions. Bioreactors can be designed to simulate the conditions of space, such as low gravity, radiation, and extreme temperatures, to better understand how living organisms adapt to these conditions. They can also be used to produce oxygen and remove carbon dioxide from the air in spacecraft. Bioreactors can be operated using different types of cultures, such as bacteria, yeast, algae, and plant cells, depending on the application. The design of bioreactors for space applications must take into account factors such as mass, volume, power consumption, and reliability, as well as the safety of the crew and the environment.
