Particulate Contamination

Particulate contamination refers to the presence of solid or liquid particles in the atmosphere or on surfaces that can cause damage or malfunction to spacecraft and their components. These particles can come from a variety of sources, including micrometeoroids, dust, and debris from launch vehicles or other spacecraft. Particulate contamination can cause abrasion, erosion, and corrosion of surfaces, as well as interference with sensitive instruments and electronics. To mitigate the effects of particulate contamination, spacecraft and their components are designed with protective coatings, filters, and shielding. Additionally, cleanroom environments are used during assembly and testing to minimize the introduction of contaminants. Particulate contamination is a significant concern for space missions, as it can compromise the performance and longevity of spacecraft and their instruments.
