Corrosion

Corrosion is the gradual destruction of materials (usually metals) by chemical and/or electrochemical reaction with their environment. In the context of space and astronautical engineering, corrosion can occur due to exposure to harsh space environment, such as atomic oxygen, solar radiation, and extreme temperatures. Corrosion can weaken the structural integrity of spacecraft and space stations, and compromise their functionality and safety. Therefore, corrosion prevention and control are critical aspects of space and astronautical engineering, and involve the use of protective coatings, surface treatments, and material selection. Corrosion monitoring and inspection are also important to detect and mitigate corrosion damage.
