Nuclear Fuel

Nuclear fuel is a material that can be used in a nuclear reactor to produce heat by nuclear fission. The most common nuclear fuels used in nuclear reactors are uranium-235 and plutonium-239. These fuels are used in the form of pellets, which are loaded into fuel rods that are then assembled into fuel assemblies. The fuel assemblies are placed in the reactor core, where the nuclear fission process takes place. During this process, the fuel releases energy in the form of heat, which is used to produce steam that drives a turbine to generate electricity. Nuclear fuel is highly radioactive and must be handled with care to prevent radiation exposure. After the fuel has been used in the reactor, it is considered to be spent fuel and must be safely stored or disposed of.
