Radioactive

Radioactive refers to the property of certain materials to emit radiation as a result of the decay of their atomic nuclei. In the context of space and astronautical engineering, radioactive materials are used in various applications such as power generation, propulsion, and scientific instruments. For example, radioisotope thermoelectric generators (RTGs) use the heat generated by the decay of radioactive isotopes to produce electricity for spacecraft missions that operate in environments where solar power is not feasible. Radioactive isotopes are also used in nuclear propulsion systems, which offer higher specific impulse and faster travel times compared to chemical propulsion systems. However, the use of radioactive materials in space also poses significant challenges in terms of safety, handling, and disposal, as well as regulatory and ethical considerations.
