Uranium-235

Uranium-235 is a fissile isotope of uranium that is capable of sustaining a chain reaction of nuclear fission. It is the only naturally occurring fissile isotope and can be found in small quantities in uranium ore. Uranium-235 is used as fuel in nuclear reactors and as the primary explosive in nuclear weapons. The process of enriching uranium-235 involves increasing the concentration of this isotope from its natural abundance of 0.7% to around 3-5%. This is typically done using gas diffusion or gas centrifugation techniques. The use of uranium-235 in nuclear technology has significant implications for energy production, national security, and international relations.
