Laser

A laser is a device that emits a coherent beam of light through the process of stimulated emission. It works by exciting atoms or molecules to a higher energy level, which then release photons of light in a specific direction. Lasers have a wide range of applications in space and astronautical engineering, including communication, navigation, remote sensing, and propulsion. They are used in laser communication systems to transmit data between spacecraft and ground stations, in laser altimeters to measure the distance between a spacecraft and a planetary surface, in lidar systems to map the topography of a planet or moon, and in laser propulsion systems to generate thrust for spacecraft. Lasers are also used in scientific instruments, such as spectrometers and interferometers, to study the properties of materials and the environment in space.
