Coherent Beam

In space and astronautical engineering, a coherent beam refers to a beam of electromagnetic radiation, such as light or radio waves, in which the phases of the wave oscillations at each point in the beam are correlated with each other. This means that the peaks and troughs of the waves are aligned, resulting in a beam that is highly directional and can be focused to a very small spot. Coherent beams are used in a variety of applications, including laser communications, remote sensing, and precision measurement. In laser communications, coherent beams are used to transmit information between spacecraft and ground stations, allowing for high-bandwidth data transfer over long distances. In remote sensing, coherent beams are used to measure the distance to objects on the ground or in space with high accuracy. In precision measurement, coherent beams are used to make extremely accurate measurements of distance, velocity, and other physical quantities.
