Electromagnetic waves can travel through the vacuum of space, making them essential for interplanetary and interstellar communication and observation. In addition to electromagnetic waves, space and astronautical engineering also deal with other types of waves, such as gravitational waves, which are ripples in the fabric of spacetime caused by the acceleration of massive objects, and plasma waves, which are oscillations in the density and electric field of ionized gases.
