Radiation Damage
Radiation damage refers to the harmful effects of ionizing radiation on materials and living organisms. In the context of space and astronautical engineering, radiation damage is a critical concern for spacecraft and their components, as well as for astronauts who are exposed to high levels of radiation in space. Radiation damage can cause degradation and failure of electronic components, solar cells, and other materials used in spacecraft, as well as increased risk of cancer and other health problems for astronauts. To mitigate radiation damage, engineers use shielding materials and design spacecraft and habitats to minimize exposure to radiation. Additionally, astronauts are monitored for radiation exposure and may take medication to reduce the risk of radiation-induced illnesses.
