Radiation Exposure

Radiation exposure refers to the amount of ionizing radiation that an astronaut is exposed to during a space mission. Ionizing radiation is a type of radiation that has enough energy to remove tightly bound electrons from atoms, which can cause damage to living tissue. Astronauts are exposed to ionizing radiation from galactic cosmic rays, solar particle events, and trapped radiation in the Earth's magnetic field. The amount of radiation exposure depends on the duration of the mission, the altitude of the spacecraft, and the level of solar activity. High levels of radiation exposure can increase the risk of cancer, cataracts, and other health problems. Therefore, it is important for astronauts to monitor their radiation exposure and take measures to reduce their exposure, such as shielding and limiting the time spent in space.
