Nuclear Propulsion Systems
Nuclear Propulsion Systems are a type of rocket engine that use nuclear reactions to generate thrust. These systems work by heating a propellant, such as liquid hydrogen, with a nuclear reactor. The heated propellant is then expelled out of a nozzle, creating thrust. Nuclear propulsion systems have the potential to provide much higher specific impulse, or fuel efficiency, than traditional chemical rockets. They also have the potential to greatly reduce travel times for deep space missions. However, nuclear propulsion systems also present significant technical and safety challenges, including the risk of radioactive contamination in the event of an accident.
