Nuclear Reactions
Nuclear reactions are processes in which the nucleus of an atom is altered, resulting in the release or absorption of energy. In space and astronautical engineering, nuclear reactions are used to power spacecraft and generate electricity. Nuclear reactors on spacecraft use nuclear fission to generate heat, which is then converted into electricity. Nuclear fusion, the process of combining two atomic nuclei into a single, more massive nucleus, is also being researched as a potential source of energy for space exploration. Nuclear reactions are also used in propulsion systems, such as nuclear thermal rockets, which use the heat generated by nuclear reactions to propel a spacecraft. However, the use of nuclear reactions in space also poses significant safety and environmental risks, and requires careful consideration and planning.
