Montreal Protocol
The Montreal Protocol is an international treaty designed to protect the ozone layer by phasing out the production and consumption of ozone-depleting substances (ODS). It was signed in 1987 and has been ratified by 197 countries. The protocol has been successful in reducing the production and consumption of ODS, such as chlorofluorocarbons (CFCs), which were commonly used in refrigeration and air conditioning systems. The reduction of ODS has helped to prevent further damage to the ozone layer, which protects the Earth from harmful ultraviolet radiation. The Montreal Protocol is considered one of the most successful international environmental agreements.
