Arc Heating
Arc heating is a process of heating a material using an electric arc. In space and astronautical engineering, arc heating is used to simulate the extreme heat generated during atmospheric re-entry of spacecraft. During re-entry, the spacecraft experiences high temperatures due to friction with the atmosphere. Arc heating is used to test the thermal protection system of the spacecraft to ensure that it can withstand the high temperatures. The process involves creating an electric arc between two electrodes and directing it towards the material to be tested. The heat generated by the arc simulates the heat generated during re-entry. Arc heating is also used in the manufacturing of certain materials, such as carbon nanotubes and graphene, which require high temperatures for their production.
