Friction

Friction is the force that opposes motion between two surfaces that are in contact. In space and astronautical engineering, friction plays a crucial role in the design and operation of spacecraft and their components. Friction can cause wear and tear on moving parts, generate heat, and affect the performance of propulsion systems. Engineers must carefully consider friction when designing spacecraft, as reducing friction can improve efficiency and extend the lifespan of components. Lubricants and coatings can be used to reduce friction, and materials with low coefficients of friction can be selected for critical components. In addition, friction can be used to control the motion of spacecraft, such as in reaction wheels and control moment gyroscopes.
