Active Radiometers

Active radiometers are instruments that emit their own electromagnetic radiation and measure the reflected or scattered radiation from a target. They are used in remote sensing applications to measure the properties of the Earth's surface and atmosphere. Active radiometers can operate in different parts of the electromagnetic spectrum, such as microwave, infrared, and visible light. They are used to measure a variety of parameters, including temperature, moisture content, vegetation cover, and atmospheric gases. Active radiometers are commonly used in satellite-based remote sensing systems, such as synthetic aperture radar (SAR) and lidar. SAR uses microwave radiation to create high-resolution images of the Earth's surface, while lidar uses laser radiation to measure the distance to a target. Active radiometers are also used in ground-based remote sensing systems, such as weather radar and laser rangefinders.
