Vision Impairment

Vision impairment refers to any degree of visual loss or limitation in the ability to see, including blindness. In the context of space and astronautical engineering, vision impairment is a significant concern for astronauts due to the effects of microgravity and exposure to radiation. Astronauts may experience changes in their vision, including flattening of the eyeball, swelling of the optic nerve, and changes in the retina. These changes can lead to visual impairment, which can impact an astronaut's ability to perform tasks critical to mission success. NASA has conducted extensive research on vision impairment in astronauts and has developed countermeasures to mitigate the effects, including exercise programs, specialized equipment, and monitoring of astronaut health.
