Thunder

In space and astronautical engineering, thunder refers to the acoustic shock wave generated by the rapid expansion of superheated air surrounding a spacecraft during re-entry into the Earth's atmosphere. This shock wave can cause significant damage to the spacecraft and is a critical factor in the design of thermal protection systems. Thunder is also used as a colloquial term to describe the sound produced by rocket engines during launch.
