Shock Wave
In space and astronautical engineering, a shock wave is a type of propagating disturbance that carries energy through a medium. Shock waves are characterized by an abrupt, nearly discontinuous change in pressure, temperature, and density of the medium. Shock waves can be generated by a variety of phenomena, such as supersonic flight, explosions, and solar flares. In space, shock waves can occur in the interstellar medium, in the solar wind, and in the Earth's magnetosphere. The study of shock waves is important in space and astronautical engineering because they can cause damage to spacecraft and satellites, and can also affect the behavior of plasmas and other ionized gases.
