Thermal Efficiency

Thermal efficiency is the ratio of the work output of a heat engine to the heat input provided to the engine. In the context of space and astronautical engineering, thermal efficiency is an important parameter for designing and optimizing the performance of rocket engines, which are heat engines that convert the energy released by burning propellants into kinetic energy of exhaust gases. The thermal efficiency of a rocket engine depends on various factors such as the combustion chamber pressure, the temperature of the combustion gases, the specific heat ratio of the propellants, and the nozzle design. A higher thermal efficiency means that more of the heat generated by the combustion process is converted into useful work, which translates into higher thrust and better fuel economy. Achieving high thermal efficiency is a key challenge in rocket engine design, as it requires balancing the competing demands of combustion stability, structural integrity, and thermal management.
