Combustion

Combustion is a chemical reaction between a fuel and an oxidant, usually oxygen, that produces heat, light, and various reaction products. In the context of space and astronautical engineering, combustion is a critical process for rocket propulsion systems. The fuel and oxidizer are typically stored separately on the rocket, and when they are combined and ignited, they undergo a rapid and exothermic reaction that produces a high-temperature, high-pressure gas that is expelled out of the rocket nozzle, generating thrust. Combustion is also used in other space applications, such as life support systems, where it can be used to generate heat and produce breathable air by reacting waste products with oxygen. Understanding the complex physics and chemistry of combustion is essential for designing efficient and reliable rocket engines and other space systems.
