Signal-to-noise Ratio

Signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) is a measure of the strength of a signal relative to the background noise present in a system. In the context of space and astronautical engineering, SNR is an important parameter for communication systems, remote sensing instruments, and other electronic devices. A high SNR indicates a strong signal and a low level of noise, while a low SNR indicates a weak signal that is difficult to distinguish from the noise. Engineers use various techniques to improve SNR, such as increasing the power of the signal, reducing the noise level, or using advanced signal processing algorithms. SNR is also affected by the distance between the transmitter and receiver, the frequency of the signal, and the characteristics of the transmission medium. In space applications, where communication links are often weak and noisy, achieving a high SNR is critical for reliable data transmission and reception.
