Scintillation Crystals

Scintillation crystals are materials that emit light when ionizing radiation passes through them. In space and astronautical engineering, scintillation crystals are used in radiation detectors to measure the energy and intensity of radiation in space. These detectors are important for protecting astronauts from harmful radiation exposure during space missions. Scintillation crystals are also used in gamma-ray telescopes to detect and study high-energy gamma rays from sources such as supernovae, black holes, and pulsars. The crystals are typically made of inorganic materials such as sodium iodide or cesium iodide, and are often coupled with photomultiplier tubes to amplify the light signals produced by the crystals.
