Radio Frequency Interference

Radio Frequency Interference (RFI) refers to the unwanted electromagnetic radiation that disrupts the communication and navigation systems of spacecraft. RFI can be caused by natural sources such as solar flares and cosmic rays, or by human-made sources such as communication devices and radar systems. RFI can affect the performance of spacecraft by degrading the quality of data transmission, causing errors in navigation, and even leading to complete system failure. To mitigate RFI, spacecraft are designed with shielding and filtering systems that reduce the impact of unwanted electromagnetic radiation. Additionally, spacecraft are often equipped with redundant communication and navigation systems to ensure mission success in the event of RFI. RFI is a critical consideration in the design and operation of spacecraft, particularly for missions that require high levels of precision and accuracy.
