Instantaneous Field Of View
Instantaneous Field of View (IFOV) is the angular size of the smallest detail that can be resolved by a remote sensing instrument at a particular distance. It is the solid angle that the instrument can view at any instant. IFOV is determined by the size of the detector array and the focal length of the optics. A smaller IFOV means that the instrument can resolve smaller details, but it covers a smaller area on the ground. A larger IFOV means that the instrument can cover a larger area on the ground, but it cannot resolve smaller details. IFOV is an important parameter in remote sensing because it determines the spatial resolution of the instrument. Spatial resolution is the ability of the instrument to distinguish between two objects that are close together. The smaller the IFOV, the higher the spatial resolution.
