Phase Change Materials

Phase Change Materials (PCMs) are substances that can store and release large amounts of thermal energy during the process of melting and solidifying. In space and astronautical engineering, PCMs are used for thermal management of spacecraft and spacesuits. They can absorb excess heat generated by electronic equipment or the human body and release it when the temperature drops. PCMs can also be used for thermal energy storage in space habitats, where they can help regulate the temperature and reduce the energy consumption of heating and cooling systems. PCMs have advantages over traditional thermal control methods, such as radiators or heat pipes, because they can store more energy per unit mass and volume, and they can operate over a wider temperature range. However, PCMs also have some limitations, such as the need for encapsulation to prevent leakage and contamination, and the potential for phase segregation and degradation over time.
