Hail
Hail is a type of precipitation that occurs when updrafts in thunderstorms carry raindrops upward into extremely cold areas of the atmosphere, where they freeze into ice. The frozen droplets then fall back down to the ground, sometimes reaching sizes of golf balls or larger. Hail can cause significant damage to buildings, crops, and vehicles, and can be dangerous to people and animals caught outside during a hailstorm. In the context of space and astronautical engineering, hail can pose a threat to spacecraft and satellites, as the impact of hailstones can damage or destroy sensitive equipment. Engineers must take into account the potential for hail damage when designing and testing spacecraft and satellite components, and may use materials that are more resistant to impact or develop protective measures to shield equipment from hail.
