Fuel Cell

A fuel cell is an electrochemical device that converts the chemical energy of a fuel and an oxidant directly into electrical energy. It consists of an anode, a cathode, and an electrolyte. The fuel is fed into the anode and the oxidant is fed into the cathode. The electrolyte allows the ions to move between the anode and the cathode, while preventing the mixing of the fuel and oxidant. The chemical reaction between the fuel and oxidant produces electricity, water, and heat. Fuel cells have the potential to be highly efficient and environmentally friendly power sources for space applications, as they produce electricity without combustion and emit only water and heat as byproducts. However, the development of fuel cells for space applications is challenging due to the harsh space environment, such as radiation, extreme temperatures, and vacuum conditions.
