Docking

Docking is the process of joining two spacecraft together while they are in space. This is a critical operation for space missions that require transfer of crew, supplies, or fuel between spacecraft. Docking can be done manually or automatically, and requires precise alignment and control of the spacecraft. The docking mechanism typically includes a series of latches, hooks, or clamps that secure the two spacecraft together, as well as electrical and data connections for communication and power transfer. Docking can be performed between spacecraft of the same type, such as two capsules or two modules of a space station, or between different types of spacecraft, such as a capsule and a space station module. Docking has been a key technology for human spaceflight, enabling missions such as the Apollo-Soyuz Test Project, the Space Shuttle program, and the International Space Station.
