Compressive Strength

Compressive strength is the maximum amount of compressive stress that a material can withstand before it fails or loses its structural integrity. In the context of space and astronautical engineering, compressive strength is an important property for materials used in spacecraft and launch vehicles. The high compressive forces experienced during launch and atmospheric re-entry can cause structural failure if the materials used do not have sufficient compressive strength. Compressive strength is also important for materials used in space habitats and structures, as they must be able to withstand the compressive forces of their own weight and any external loads. Testing for compressive strength involves applying a compressive load to a material until it fails or deforms significantly. This test is commonly used to evaluate the suitability of materials for use in space applications.
