Adsorption

Adsorption is the process of adhesion of atoms, ions, or molecules from a gas, liquid, or dissolved solid to a surface. In the context of space and astronautical engineering, adsorption is an important process in the design and operation of spacecraft and space habitats. Adsorption is used to remove impurities from the air and water in closed environments, such as the International Space Station. Adsorption is also used in the design of air and water recycling systems for long-duration space missions. The adsorption process can be enhanced by the use of specialized materials, such as zeolites and activated carbon, which have a high surface area and can selectively adsorb specific molecules. The study of adsorption in space environments is important for understanding the behavior of materials in microgravity and for developing new materials for space applications.
