Flame Ionization Detector


A Flame Ionization Detector (FID) is a device used in gas chromatography to detect and measure trace amounts of organic compounds in a sample. The FID works by burning the sample in a hydrogen flame, which produces ions and electrons. The ions and electrons are then collected on a biased electrode, generating a current that is proportional to the amount of organic compounds in the sample. FIDs are highly sensitive and can detect compounds at parts-per-billion levels. They are commonly used in environmental monitoring, industrial hygiene, and forensic investigations.
