Gas Chromatography

Gas Chromatography (GC) is a technique used to separate and analyze volatile compounds in a gaseous state. It involves the injection of a sample into a heated inlet, where it is vaporized and carried by an inert gas through a column containing a stationary phase. The stationary phase interacts differently with each compound, causing them to separate as they travel through the column. The separated compounds are then detected and quantified by a detector, such as a flame ionization detector or a mass spectrometer. GC is widely used in the space and astronautical engineering field for the analysis of gases in spacecraft and planetary atmospheres, as well as for the detection of trace amounts of volatile organic compounds in materials and equipment used in space missions.
