VOR

VOR, or VHF Omnidirectional Range, is a type of short-range radio navigation system that enables aircraft with a receiving unit to determine their position and stay on course by receiving radio signals transmitted by a network of fixed ground radio beacons. It uses frequencies in the very high frequency (VHF) band from 108 to 117.95 MHz. Developed in the United States beginning in the 1930s and deployed by 1946, VOR is the standard air navigational system in the world, used by both commercial and general aviation. In the aerospace engineering context, VOR systems are crucial for safe and efficient navigation. They provide a constant line of position and are often co-located with Distance Measuring Equipment (DME) to provide both the direction and distance to the VOR station. The system is based on phase comparison of a reference signal and a variable signal, allowing the receiver to distinguish the azimuth information from the signal.
