User Datagram Protocol

User Datagram Protocol (UDP) is a transport layer protocol that operates on top of Internet Protocol (IP) and provides a connectionless communication service. Unlike Transmission Control Protocol (TCP), UDP does not provide error checking or flow control mechanisms. UDP is commonly used for applications that require low latency and can tolerate some data loss, such as video streaming, online gaming, and Domain Name System (DNS) queries. UDP packets are also used for broadcasting and multicasting. In the context of space and astronautical engineering, UDP can be used for communication between spacecraft and ground stations, as well as between different spacecraft in a network. However, due to the high error rate in space communication, UDP is often used in conjunction with other protocols, such as the Consultative Committee for Space Data Systems (CCSDS) File Delivery Protocol (CFDP), to ensure reliable data transfer.
