Thermal Insulators
Thermal insulators are materials or devices that reduce or prevent the transfer of heat between objects with different temperatures. In the context of space and astronautical engineering, thermal insulation is crucial for spacecraft and space habitats to maintain a stable internal temperature and protect against extreme temperature fluctuations in space. Insulation materials can include foams, fibers, and coatings that are designed to minimize heat transfer by conduction, convection, and radiation. The effectiveness of thermal insulation is measured by its thermal conductivity, which is the rate at which heat flows through the material. The lower the thermal conductivity, the better the insulation. Thermal insulation is also important for space suits and other equipment that astronauts use during spacewalks or extravehicular activities (EVAs), as they must protect against the extreme temperatures of space.
