Substrate
In space and astronautical engineering, substrate refers to the underlying material or surface on which a device or component is mounted or deposited. The substrate can be a solid material, such as silicon or glass, or a flexible material, such as a polymer film. The choice of substrate is critical to the performance and reliability of the device, as it affects the thermal, mechanical, and electrical properties of the system. Substrates are commonly used in the fabrication of electronic and photonic devices, such as solar cells, sensors, and microprocessors, as well as in the deposition of thin films and coatings for thermal control and protection against radiation and debris in space.
