Polymer

In space and astronautical engineering, a polymer is a large molecule composed of repeating subunits, known as monomers, that are bonded together. Polymers are used extensively in spacecraft construction due to their lightweight, high strength, and durability. They are commonly used in the fabrication of thermal protection systems, such as heat shields, as well as in the construction of structural components, such as fuel tanks and solar panels. Polymers can also be used in the fabrication of flexible materials, such as inflatable habitats and airbags, which can be deployed in space. The properties of polymers can be tailored to meet specific mission requirements, such as resistance to radiation and extreme temperatures.
