Specific Heat Capacity
Specific Heat Capacity is the amount of heat energy required to raise the temperature of a unit mass of a substance by one degree Celsius. In space and astronautical engineering, specific heat capacity is an important parameter for designing thermal control systems for spacecraft. The specific heat capacity of materials used in spacecraft structures and components determines how much heat they can absorb before their temperature rises to unacceptable levels. This information is used to design thermal protection systems that prevent spacecraft from overheating during launch and re-entry. Specific heat capacity is also used to calculate the amount of heat generated by spacecraft components, such as electronics and propulsion systems, and to design cooling systems that remove this heat to maintain safe operating temperatures.
