Heat Capacity

Heat capacity is the amount of heat energy required to raise the temperature of a substance by one degree Celsius. In the context of space and astronautical engineering, heat capacity is an important property of materials used in spacecraft and space habitats. The ability of a material to absorb and retain heat can impact the thermal control of a spacecraft or habitat, which is critical for the survival of crew and equipment. Heat capacity is also important in the design of thermal protection systems for spacecraft during atmospheric re-entry. Materials with high heat capacity can absorb more heat energy and protect the spacecraft from burning up during re-entry. In addition, heat capacity is a key factor in the design of thermal energy storage systems for space missions, where excess heat generated by equipment can be stored and used later when needed.
