Rescue Agreement

The Rescue Agreement is a treaty signed in 1967 that outlines the legal framework for conducting rescue operations of astronauts in distress. It requires that all spacefaring nations provide assistance to astronauts in distress and cooperate in the rescue of astronauts. The agreement also establishes the responsibility of the launching state to take all possible steps to rescue astronauts and return them to their launching state. Additionally, it requires that the launching state inform other spacefaring nations of any accidents or incidents that occur during spaceflight. The Rescue Agreement is an important component of international space law and has been ratified by over 100 countries.
