Redox Reaction
Redox reaction, also known as oxidation-reduction reaction, is a chemical reaction in which there is a transfer of electrons between two chemical species. One species loses electrons (undergoes oxidation) while the other gains electrons (undergoes reduction). In space and astronautical engineering, redox reactions are important in the design and operation of fuel cells, which generate electricity by converting the chemical energy of a fuel and an oxidant into electrical energy. Fuel cells are used in spacecraft to generate electricity and provide drinking water by combining hydrogen and oxygen. Redox reactions are also important in the corrosion of materials in space, as the harsh environment can cause metals to undergo oxidation and reduction reactions that can weaken or damage spacecraft components.
