Potentiometry

Potentiometry is a measurement technique used in space and astronautical engineering to determine the concentration of ions or molecules in a solution. It involves measuring the potential difference between two electrodes, one of which is a reference electrode and the other is an indicator electrode that responds to changes in the concentration of the analyte. The potential difference is proportional to the logarithm of the concentration of the analyte, according to the Nernst equation. Potentiometry is widely used in spacecraft and satellite systems to monitor the concentration of electrolytes in batteries, fuel cells, and life support systems. It is also used in the analysis of extraterrestrial samples, such as lunar regolith and Martian soil, to determine their chemical composition and potential for supporting life.
