Potential Energy

In space and astronautical engineering, potential energy refers to the energy possessed by an object due to its position or configuration in a gravitational or electromagnetic field. In other words, it is the energy that an object has stored within itself as a result of its position or state. In space, potential energy is an important concept in orbital mechanics, where it is used to calculate the energy required to move an object from one orbit to another or to escape the gravitational pull of a planet or moon. Potential energy is also a key consideration in the design and operation of spacecraft, where it is used to optimize trajectories and minimize fuel consumption.
