POES

Polar Operational Environmental Satellite (POES) is a series of polar-orbiting weather satellites operated by the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) to provide global weather data and environmental information. The POES program collects data on atmospheric temperature and humidity, sea surface temperature, land surface temperature, cloud cover, precipitation, and ozone levels. The data collected by POES is used for weather forecasting, climate research, and environmental monitoring. The satellites are equipped with a variety of sensors, including Advanced Very High Resolution Radiometer (AVHRR), which provides visible and infrared images of the Earth's surface, and the High Resolution Infrared Radiation Sounder (HIRS), which measures temperature and humidity in the atmosphere. The POES program has been in operation since 1978, and has been instrumental in improving weather forecasting and understanding climate change.
