Passive Shielding

Passive shielding is a method of protecting spacecraft and their occupants from the harmful effects of space radiation by using materials that absorb or deflect radiation. This type of shielding does not require any active systems or power sources to function, and is designed to provide continuous protection throughout the mission. Passive shielding can be made from a variety of materials, including metals, polymers, and composites, and can be placed inside or outside the spacecraft. The effectiveness of passive shielding depends on the thickness and composition of the material, as well as the energy and type of radiation being encountered. Passive shielding is an important consideration for long-duration space missions, such as those to Mars or beyond, where astronauts will be exposed to high levels of radiation for extended periods of time.
