Particulate Matter

Particulate Matter (PM) refers to a complex mixture of solid and liquid particles suspended in the air. These particles can be natural or anthropogenic in origin and can vary in size, shape, and chemical composition. In the context of space and astronautical engineering, PM can have significant impacts on human health and the performance of spacecraft and equipment. Exposure to PM can cause respiratory and cardiovascular problems, and can also damage sensitive equipment such as solar panels and optical instruments. PM can also affect the performance of rocket engines and other propulsion systems by clogging fuel injectors and reducing combustion efficiency. Therefore, it is important for space and astronautical engineers to develop effective strategies for monitoring and controlling PM levels both on Earth and in space.
